Volunteers are the heart of Gold Country Wildlife Rescue! Each brings their unique set of talents and skills to support our day-to-day operations. We want you to make sure you meet Volunteer Extraordinaire – Joan Flinn.
Joan came to us over 11 years ago and is a true gem! She has worn many volunteer hats at GCWR. In addition to working in the Wildlife Intake Center (WIC), volunteering at events, and helping with special projects, she also served as the Treasurer on our Board of Directors. But, it is her construction skills that have made a lasting impression at GCWR, and on everyone who volunteers alongside her.
Fondly referred to as “MacGyver Joan” she is the go-to person when something, almost anything, at the WIC needs to be repaired or constructed from scratch. Since the beginning of the year, she has been at our new property several days a week and some weekends, working on very ambitious projects. The latest is to construct the individual 4×8 ft and 4×12 ft panels made of lumber and specially coated wire mesh to build the different sizes of permanent outside enclosures.
So far, she has constructed 190 panels that now make-up nine separate enclosures, which currently house a total of 97 small mammals and various species of birds to prepare them for eventual release back to the wild.
And, she is not finished! Her next set of panels will expand the existing barn owl enclosure and complete the roof of a flight cage already under construction. Joan is one amazing go-getter and we are thankful to have her talents to help the wildlife in our care.
