It’s wildlife season again, and being prepared is the number one priority for all of us. Having “go-bags” ready to go for you, your family, and your pets has become commonplace, but what about the wildlife? What can we do to help them?
What do I do if I see a wildlife wildfire victim anywhere in the state of California?
Note the location of where you saw the animal (GPS coordinates, address, cross streets, etc.) and call the Wildlife Disaster Network at 1-800-942-6459. Leave a message, and you will get a callback. (If you get a picture or video, that can also be helpful, but do not jeopardize your own safety in order to do so.)
What do I do if I’m in Placer or neighboring counties, have been affected by fire, and need assistance with wildlife?
Gold Country Wildlife Rescue is here to help. We partner with the Wildlife Disaster Network and serve Placer and neighboring counties for wildlife rehabilitation needs year-round. Call us at 1-530-885-0862, leave a message, and you will get a call back as quickly as possible.
What if I find an injured or orphaned bear, mountain lion or adult deer?
Please call the California Department of Fish and Wildlife immediately at 1-916-358-2917 or the Wildlife Disaster Network at 1-800-942-6459.
What else can I do to help wildlife during wildfire season?
Share this information – the more people and organizations that know who to call and how to help the better!
If you see a wild animal that needs help and you want to assist it, call for guidance if you are unsure of what you are doing. Handling wildlife can be dangerous and should not be done in any manner that is unsafe to humans or animals.
If you have to evacuate and have time, leave water for wildlife.
What should I not do?
Never put yourself in danger. Wildlife and wildfires are both potentially dangerous to humans and human safety is key!
If the fire is near, get to a safe place!
If you encounter a dangerous animal, do not handle it without proper guidance. Ask for help!
