Keep Them Wild: Prevent Wildlife from being Trapped in your Trash

We recently received this gray fox ID# 22-3399 with its head trapped in a plastic jar.  It’s unknown how long the animal was trapped but rescuers were able to catch the emaciated fox and bring them to our center for care.  Wildlife technicians safely removed the jar around its head and treated the fox for severe malnutrition and dehydration.  The gray fox is now resting and recovering.  Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time this has happened, as each year we receive a number of these wildlife cases.  See our photos from past years of patients trapped in containers and watch our video here featuring a skunk that had its head trapped in a jar last year.

Jar Stuck on Skunk’s Head and Proper Trash Disposal Reminder

What can you do to give wildlife a better chance at being wild?

There are a few ways you can prevent wildlife from getting trapped in your trash.

  • First, wash jars and containers before discarding them in the trash and recycling to keep your garbage from attracting wildlife.
  • Second, when discarding jars and containers DO NOT remove the lid, please secure the lid to the container to prevent animals from getting stuck in them.
  • Finally, be sure to secure your trash cans and recycling bins at all times to prevent critters from going through your trash. Thank you for your help in protecting our wildlife!
